Counting Braids: Generating Functions for Positive Braids

By Jonathan Boiser, SAMPLe organizer pro tempor. Refreshments will be served at 3:15 PM.

The Fall 2010 schedule is currently under development. If you want to contribute a talk or have an idea for a meeting, please contact Jonathan Boiser via UC Merced Webmail or in person at AOA 111.

What are we looking for in a SAMPLe talk? Here are a few suggestions:

  • "What are you working on?": Give a brief talk on your research, no matter what stage it is in. Are you learning a new technique that might be useful to others? Have a master's thesis defense talk you can recycle? Share it with us!
  • History of mathematics: Do you have a story about a mathematician you have read about or have known personally?
  • Mathematics "just-for-fun": Did you see something interesting in SIAM Review, MAA College Mathematics Magazine, or the AMS Bulletin? Come back from a conference with a cool talk to report? Bring it to SAMPLe!

The SAMPLe Seminar was created by students of UC Merced's Applied Mathematics graduate group as an avenue for socializing, exchanging ideas, and promoting interest in mathematics within the UCM community.

If you are interested in learning new math, presenting something interesting you discovered or stumbled upon, or simply want to take some time off to relax and hang out, please know that you are always welcome to join us in the SAMPLe space.

If your idea of mathematical "light reading" is the Springer Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics series, you really need to take a break and check out some of the popular mathematics books below. Please send your suggestions to Jonathan Boiser or bring them up at the next meeting.
